Something else is alive
Beside the clock’s loneliness
Ted Hughes, “The Thought-Fox”
in the gulley wary as a
among weedstalks her skulk
ear stiffen vagabond hunker
in hollows blaze of bared teeth
rusty points restless over-
tracking squat among seedhusks
white-tipped thickets of chance
underground shapeshifter stumphole
crouch sacred fur masked
in gloaming stalk supple flank
sly shadow fire stealer picking
through crickets dawn hush
rustle and gnaw dusk familiar
quarry
